Wireless sensor networks have become \nincreasingly popular due to their wide range of applications. \nEnergy consumption is one of the biggest constraints of the \nwireless sensor node and this limitation combined with a \ntypical deployment of large number of nodes have added \nmany challenges to the design and management of wireless \nsensor networks. They are typically used for remote \nenvironment monitoring in areas where providing electrical \npower is difficult. Therefore, the devices need to be powered \nby batteries and alternative energy sources. Because battery \nenergy is limited, the use of different techniques for energy \nsaving is one of the hottest topics in WSNs. In this work, we \npresent a survey of power saving and energy optimization \ntechniques for wireless sensor networks, which enhances the \nones in existence and introduces the reader to the most well \nknown available methods that can be used to save energy. \nThey are analyzed from several points of view: Device \nhardware, transmission, MAC and routing protocols.
