The precise Raman linewidths, wavenumber shifts and integrated intensities of the isotropic parts of the Raman spectra in the C≡N stretching region 2210–2250 cm-1 were obtained for the ν(C≡N) stretching mode of acrylonitrile (acryl) in (acryl + phenol) and (acryl + methanol) binary mixtures. The concentration dependence of the wavenumber shifts and linewidth changes was examined in both systems and the experimental results thus obtained in the case of the (acryl + methanol) system were explained using the indirect dephasing model, which is based on Anderson–Kubo formalism. In the case of the (acryl + phenol) system, the variation of ΓL with C was explained in terms of trimer formation. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
