Abstract

The fecundity of female rats on a diet of sucrose and distilled water during pregnancy was compared to rats on the same diet receiving daily injections of 4–6 i.u. prolactin or 5 mg. progesterone. At autopsy on the 21st day after mating there was an average of 8.1, 10.8, and 10.0 implantation sites which included 2.2, 7.6, and 7.8 living young per rat in the control, progesterone, and prolactin groups, respectively. It is suggested that rats on a diet of only sucrose have a deficiency of prolactin.
