Abstract The reflection spectra of KDP, ADP, DKDP and KDA are studied in the VUV and XUV regions with polarized light. X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) of KDP and ADP are also studied. The assignment of the absorption peaks is made by comparing with the energy levels of PO3- 4, H2PO− 4 and H4PO+ 4 ions calculated by the extended Hückel method. The temperature dependence of the absorption edges is also measured, and an abrupt change is found at the transition temperature in KDP and DKDP.
