Elemental sulfur is extracted from soil with carbon disulfide and assayed either by direct spectrophotometry at 382 nm, a method suitable for soils with an elemental sulfur content of 1 mg/g or higher, or by evaporating the carbon disulfide and redissolving the sulfur in petroleum ether for assay by a sensitive colorimetric method in which the sulfur reacts with cyanide to form thiocyanate which is assayed colorimetrically with ferric chloride.
