The purpose of this study was to identify the most important factors related to women's participation in mathematics. The results of a national survey of 1788 high school seniors are reported. Measures of participation, sex-role stereotyping, career and academic plans, attitudes toward mathematics, parental influence, and the influence of significant others were included. Results of correlation and regression analyses indicate that (a) positive attitudes toward mathematics, (b) perceived need for mathematics for future career and educational plans, and (c) positive influences of parents, teachers, and counselors have the strongest relationship to participation.
