Abstract

We report results from a measurement of the inclusive processes $\mathrm{pp}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\mathrm{Xp}$ and $\mathrm{pd}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\mathrm{Xd}$ in the range $5<\frac{{{M}_{x}}^{2}}{s}<0.1$, $0.01\ensuremath{\lesssim}|t|\ensuremath{\lesssim}0.1$ ${(\mathrm{G}\mathrm{e}\mathrm{V}/\mathit{c})}^{2}$, and incident proton momenta of 65, 154, and 372 GeV/c. Both $\mathrm{pp}$ and $\mathrm{pd}$ data show an exponential $t$ dependence and a dominant $\frac{1}{{{M}_{x}}^{2}}$ behavior for $\frac{{{M}_{x}}^{2}}{s}\ensuremath{\lesssim}0.05$. By comparing $\mathrm{pp}$ and $\mathrm{pd}$ data we test factorization and, using the Glauber model, we measure the $\mathrm{XN}$ total cross section, ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{\mathrm{XN}}=43\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}10$ mb.
