Efficiently upconverting, spherical ZnAl<sub>2</sub>O<sub>4</sub> nanoparticles (NPs), doped with erbium and ytterbium, were synthesized by a combustion aerosol method (CAM) and transported to cytosol of carcinoma cell line (HeLa) for the first time.
