Abstract

The period of plane standing waves on the surface of an inviscid incompressible fluid of finite depth has been calculated to third order by Tadjbakhsh and Keller [1960]. This work represents experiments performed to study the largest of such waves. The experiments were performed in a tank 59.5 cm long and 29.7 cm wide. Waves were created having maximum amplitude at the center and two ends. Since the width was half the length, very strong coupling of transverse and longitudinal modes occurred, as described by Taylor [1953], to prevent which, a baffle was inserted the length of the tank. Its exact position was unimportant, provided that it was not a submultiple of the length.
