Femtosecond transient absorption spectra of C60 complexed with N,N-dimethylaniline (DMA) demonstrate the formation of the DMA+:C−60 ion pair on a time scale of 1 to 2 ps. At later times a strong near infrared absorption (λ = 1.1 μm to 800 nm) is observed which is attributed to C−60. The charge recombination occurs on a time scale in the range from 20 ps (neat DMA) to 55 ps (toluene diluted DMA). Significant solvation effects are observed which will require further to unravel.
