Abstract

A treatment of pressure broadening and shifts caused by a combination of resonance and higher-order interactions is developed on the basis of the phase-shift theory of impact broadening and applied to the recent measurements in the rare gases. Oscillator strengths of the resonance transitions from the levels 1P1 and 3P1 are deduced for neon, argon and krypton. In each gas the ratio of these f values is in agreement with that calculated from the coupling parameters derived from the term and g values. It is predicted that the shift associated with the higher-order interactions is partially suppressed in the presence of resonance interactions and some evidence of this effect is found in the published results for helium.
