We have been interested in those factors other than repression which control the extent of protein biosynthesis directed by bacterial genes. These factors include the frequency with which each gene is transcribed, the number of ribosomes which translate each messenger RNA (mRNA), and the functional (as well as chemical) lifetime of the messenger molecule.
