Abstract Spectral parameters of the UV absorption and emission spectrum of benzene dissolved in aqueous solutions of potassium oleate and 1‐pentanol were measured. By comparing these parameters with those for solutions of benzene in hydrocarbon solvents, it was concluded that the major portion of the benzene solubilized in the mixed micelles was in a relatively nonpolar environment. These results agree with previous studies of benzene dissolved in sodium lauryl sulfate solutions. Estimations of the energy of transfer of benzene from water to the mixed micelle also support this conclusion.
