Abstract

When I agreed to review An Introduction to Underwater Acoustics I expected something like an updated version of Ocean Acoustics: Theory and Experiment in Underwater Sound by Tolstoy and Clay. This and other classics cover the basics well, and I wondered how the author could improve on their presentations. However, Lurton's book is not an updated version of the old classics. The main focus is engineering, and the book's purpose is to provide readers with enough knowledge to understand how underwater acoustic systems work, what they are and are not capable of, and where to begin from a design standpoint.
