Dielectric relaxation in the 1-propanol-2-methylpentane system has been studied at eight concentrations down to 14.3 mole % alcohol and over the temperature range in which dispersion occurs in the audio—radio-frequency region. Above 50 mole % alcohol the primary dispersion is characterized by a single relaxation time and the secondary dispersion is relatively small, accounting for about 5% of the total. Below this concentration, the primary dispersion becomes increasingly asymmetric with dilution and the second dispersion increases in amplitude relative to the first. A ring—chain—monomer equilibrium is postulated to account for the increasing relative importance of the secondary dispersion with increasing dilution and decreasing temperature.
