Abstract The theoretical expression for the height equivalent to a theoretical plate is derived for a continuous counter‐current adsorber and compared with the expression for a chromatographic system. The ratio of these quantities is generally about 0.5 under practical operating conditions but the precise relationship depends on the Peclet and Stanton numbers as well as on the counter‐current flow ratio.
