Abstract Imidazolium based room temperature ionic liquids have been used to extract selectively L ‐tryptophan from fermentation broth. ${\rm B}{\rm F}^{-}_{4} $ anion was found to enhance dramatically the partitioning of L ‐tryptophan into ionic liquid phase from aqueous solutions.
