Abstract

A method was developed for the determination of odorcausing compounds in swine housing dust. Dust sampleswere extracted with methanol while heating to 60C. After partitioning, the methanol containing the compounds of interestwas analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) using flame ionization detection (FID). Efficiency of extraction was proven byspike recovery. Samples of dust from houses treated with various odorcontrolling systems were compared to untreatedcontrols. This method allowed for relative comparisons of odor compounds that could be used to evaluate the effectivenessof engineering systems to control dust and odor.
