Abstract

The adhesion of spores of ten different species of Bacillus to hydrophobic and hydrophilic glass has been investigated. Hydrophobicity, ζ‐potential and morphology of the spore surfaces have also been studied and related to the capacity of spores to adhere to solid surfaces. All spores investigated adhered more easily to the hydrophobic than to the hydrophilic surface. Hydrophobicity and ζ‐potential on the spore surface also influenced adhesion. In the case of B. cereus (NTCT 2599), B. cereus (IAM 1110) and B. mycoides (ATCC 6462), appendages are suggested to be a promoting factor in adhesion.
