If an aqueous sample cell is arranged such that the electric field vectors in the cavity are substantially perpendicular to the surface of the cell, a good cavity Q is observed and high quality EPR signals can be obtained. Polarization charges induced on the surface of the sample cause a very marked reduction of the electric field strength in the sample compared with that in the cavity, and the dielectric loss is small. The rf magnetic flux density B as determined by EPR experiments is substantially unchanged, indicating that ▿×E in the sample is unchanged.
