Abstract

Reversed-phase planar chromatography has been used to study the hydrophobic properties of sixteen new herbicides. Solute retention factors in pure water, log kw , were determined by linear extrapolation and by the new method based on Ościk’s equation. The effect on solute retention and log kw values of the pH of the buffer used as mobile phase component was analyzed. The log kw values were proposed as descriptors of the hydrophobic properties of the compounds and so were compared with calculated log P values, i.e. partition coefficients in n -octanol-water systems.
