Abstract The interaction of diclofenac sodium with reagents viz. 2,3-Dichloro-5, 6-dicyano 1, 4-benzoquinone (DDQ), 2,4-Dichloro-6-nitrophenol (DCNP) and Iodine in non-aqueous solvent was found to give intensely coloured products. A spectrophotometric method based on this reaction is described for quantitation of diclofenac sodium. The absorbance of coloured products was measured at 460 nm for DDQ, 425 nm for DCNP and 360 nm for Iodine. The effect of several variables on the colour development was studied. The mole ratio of reactants has been established in each case. The proposed methods have been applied successfully for the analysis of diclofenac sodium in raw material and also in pharmaceutical preparations with good accuracy and precision.
