The beta ray gaging technique for determining leaf water content and internal water status of plants was investigated. Promethium-147 was shown to provide beta rays of the right energy to give the best response to water changes in the cotton leaves with thicknesses of 15 to 35 mg cm/sup -2/ Equipment construction and gauge performance were checked using a 2 mu C promethium-147 source on plants under controlled environmental conditions. The instrument showed reliable responses to rapid change in water conditions of plants. With proper calibrations, leaf water and internal water (relative turgidity or diffusion pressure deficit) changes can be followed. (auth)
