Abstract Dichroic spectra of anthracene, acridine and phenazine in stretched PVA (polyvinylalcohol) sheets were measured above 210 mμ. Using the results of the dichroic spectra, the absorption spectrum of each compound was divided into two kinds of absorptions polarized to the long ( x ) and the short ( y ) axes of the molecule. By comparing the results of the divided spectra with those of the Pariser‐Parr‐Pople calculations involved a variable ß approximation, assignment of the absorption bands for the above compounds were established. Near ultraviolet absorption spectrum of each compound consists of four bands, which are polarized to the y‐, x‐, x‐ and y‐axes of the molecule in the order of decreasing wavelength.
