We propose an algorithm that automatically detects clear scene cut locations from an MPEG coded video bit stream. The algorithm is based on the detection of the majority of intra-macroblocks and the directionality of the two neighbouring B-frames motion vector types from the bit stream. It is shown that the method is able to identify the location of scene cuts in I-, P- and each one of B-frames with a 100% success. Moreover, the algorithm can be adapted to operate for different group of picture (GOP) structures of MPEG coded streams.
