Two possible theoretical explanations of schizophrenic gaze‐avoidance are considered. The first supposes that it is due to stimulus‐avoidance, while the second considers it to be specifically person‐avoidance. An experiment designed to distinguish between these explanations is reported, and it is considered that the findings correspond more closely to the person‐avoidance than the stimulus‐avoidance explanation.
