Linewidths in x-ray photoemission and x-ray emission spectroscopies: What do they measure?

X-ray photoemmission measurements on a variety of polar materials yield core level widths that are considerably broader and more dependent on chemical environment than those determined from x-ray emission measurements. This result indicates that in these materials there are significant nonlifetime contributions to intrinsic photoemmission linewidths.
