The formalism of irreversible thermodynamics is employed to derive expressions for the sedimentation coefficients of the species in a multicomponent system in terms of experimentally accessible quantities. Equations are presented for certain limiting cases which may be encountered experimentally. The determination of the hydration of macromolecules by sedimentation methods is examined.
