Abstract The oxidation of phase pure ZnS in the wurtzite and sphalerite modification upon heating in an air flow has been studied by simultaneous thermogravimetry‐differential thermal analysis and in‐situ X‐ray diffraction at high temperature (high temperature camera and electron synchrotron). The oxidation of wurtzite starts at higher temperature, ZnO is formed without any detectable side or intermediate products. Sphalerite oxidation starts at lower temperature, ZnSO 4 and Zn 3 O(SO 4 ) 2 are formed intermediately in side reactions yielding finally ZnO.
