On the mechanism of the Doebner–Miller reaction

Abstract

The reaction of acetaldehyde and aniline in deuterated media has led to substituted tetrahydroquinaldines. Analysis of the deuteration pattern indicates that the previously accepted mechanism of the reaction is incorrect. An alternative mechanism is proposed.
