Abstract

Paramagnetic radicals have been detected in solid CO 2 with gamma irradiation at 77 K with the measurement of electron spin resonance (ESR). Species of O 3 - , CO 3 - , CH 3 , SO 3 - and HO 2 are identified. The lifetimes of O 3 - , CH 3 and HO 2 at several temperatures were obtained by isothermal annealing experiments. Their stability at the ambient temperature of Mars and icy satellites was estimated from the Arrhenius plot of the lifetime for the future possibility of ESR dating of solid CO 2 .
