Summary Measurements have been made of the damage caused by α-particle irradiation of several materials; some results are given for electron and ultra-violet irradiation. A comparison of the fluorescence efficiency for a-particle and electron excitation for these materials is made. The implication of the results is discussed in some detail, and analysis leads to a new understanding of the abnormally low α-particle fluorescence yield in organic materials.
