The use of continuous infusion epidural analgesia (CIEA) with local anesthetic has become more popular since it provides more consistent levels of analgesia than an intermittent technique. On the basis of studies indicating that patients require less narcotic analgesic when PCA is employed, the current study was designed to assess local anesthetic requirements when a patient controlled epidural analgesia (PCEA) technique with local anesthetic was employed.
