Recent observations of narrow emission and absorption lines of CdS:Ni2+ are summarized. The various fine-structure lines are assigned to transitions of a detailed energy level scheme including the Jahn-Teller effect. The electron-phonon interaction is studied using a model of coupling of different local radial vibrational modes of T2 symmetry to the electronic ground state and the excited state. This Jahn-Teller model describes the fine structure and gives the correct isotope shifts. The Zeeman splitting is explained qualitatively only and possible improvements in the model are discussed.
