Abstract Laboratory experiments were executed, simulating debris flows under different conditions. Particle orientation of debris flow material was studied, as well as relationships between physical properties and clast orientation. A linear relationship between water content and mechanical strength was found. The latter is tentatively thought to depend also on the internal temperature of the flowing mass. Moreover, strength appears to be related to the orientation of clasts within the debris flow deposits.
