Abstract Long thin prismatic loops of edge dislocation have recently been observed in plastically deformed crystals of many materials examined in the electron microscope (Price 1960, Washburn et al. 1960, Howie 1960, Seagall 1960). The formation of these loops has not yet been explained. It is of importance in deciding between various proposed mechanisms for their formation to know whether the loops are predominantly of vacancy or interstitial type, or whether interstitial and vacancy loops occur equally frequently.
