The elevated eosinophilic counts in biopsies and eosinophilic indices in specimens of squamous cell carcinoma of the aerodigestive tract are a histopathologic marker associated with tumor invasion and a clinical predictor for aggressive tumor biology. Similarly, the presence of eosinophils meeting these thresholds in an excisional specimen should indicate the need for additional therapeutic measures and close surveillance to detect earlier locoregional recurrence and possible distant metastasis.
