The large uncertainties inherent in correction methods using linear equations are expressed in terms of the behaviour of the Fourier transforms of the observed profile and the apparatus function. The Fourier transform method is described in a form which provides a systematic allowance for the effects of experimental errors, so that the process can conveniently be programmed for a computer.
