This paper demonstrates the stabilization of large power systems using voltage-source-converter-based high voltage direct current (HVDC) links. Based on global power system measurements, a model predictive control (MPC) scheme manipulates the power injections of the HVDC links to damp oscillations in the ac system. The grid controller explicitly accounts for constraints and the expected future behavior of the system. Different scenarios like the loss of production, the loss of consumption and changes to the grid topology are studied in the continental European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSO-E) system. The simulations illustrate the performance enhancement obtained with a global MPC-based grid controller, compared to a local damping controller and HVDC links with constant reference values.
