Abstract

Abstract A survey has been made of the accumulation of cadmium by 174 strains of bacteria and 29 moulds, isolated from polluted sites; or obtained from culture collections, with a view to obtaining a strain suitable for removing dissolved cadmium from industrial wastes. The best strain, a Citrobaoter sp., was isolated from a site heavily polluted with lead. It displayed the best combination of accumulation of cadmium together with resistance to the metal, whereas organisms isolated from cadmium ‐ polluted sites had very low uptakes.
