Abstract

The isolation and characterization of a rapidly growing, friable, green, 2,4-D tolerant callus line of birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus cv. Leo) is described. Differences in cell morphology, growth rate, totipotency, and 2,4-D tolerance were examined between selected and control callus stocks. Plants were regenerated from both the 2,4-D tolerant callus and from a number of callus lines which had been exposed to high 2,4-D levels. The selected plant populations are being maintained and increased by shoot tip culture.
