ABSTRACT Observations of dune patterns in the central Ténéré desert, Niger, reveal a significant association between different dune morphologies and sand types. It is suggested that the bi‐modal sands that are associated with low dunes and flat areas can be explained by the protection of fine sands in the inter‐particle voids of the coarse creep fraction.
