Inefficiency and reversibility in the photodimerization of 2-cyclopentenone

Abstract

The maximum efficiency for photodimerization of cyclopentenone in acetonitrile is 36%. The intermediacy of metastable dimeric species, 64% of which revert to two ground state molecules, is indicated.
