Abstract

Like mother nature: Biologically inspired organic–inorganic hybrid films comprising alternating layers of chitosan and micro- and nanoplatelets of layered double hydroxides mimic the unique layered microstructures of seashell nacre (see picture) and display high tensile strength. Moreover, the hybrid films can be endowed with the optical properties of the platelets. Detailed facts of importance to specialist readers are published as ”Supporting Information”.
