Abstract The unnatural bile pigments mesobilirubin‐IVα, mesobilirubin‐XIIIα and etiobilirubin‐IVγ were synthesized following self‐coupling of the pyrromethenones ψ‐xanthobilirubic acid methyl ester, xanthobilirubic acid methyl ester and kryptopyrromethenone, respectively.
