Abstract The polarized fluorescence spectrum of the naphthalene excimer was measured with the aid of a stretched polymer film technique, and the polarization of the excimer fluorescence was determined to be isotropic. The PPP method extended to a three dimensional way has been applied to calculate the electronic structure of the naphthalene excimer, in which various kinds of thermal distortion (vibration) modes are considered. The isotropic nature of the excimer fluorescence polarization has been explained assuming that two kinds of thermal distortion modes are evenly contributed to the excimer emission.
