Abstract

A beam-gas experiment for the study of reactions of excited Ca atoms with HCl, Cl2 is described where experimental parameters are controlled nearly simultaneously by optical methods in most cases. The reactive cross sections for the following chemiluminescent reactions were determined: From the ratios of these values with the total cross sections for reactive and non-reactive quenching of the excited Ca states photon yields are derived; these are Φ(σ*(1)) = 39·0 ± 6·3 per cent, Φ(σ*(2)) = 22·5 ± 4·4 per cent, Φ(σ*(3)) = 5·5 ± 1·3 per cent.
