Broadening and shift of the first five pure rotational lines of hydrogen chloride have been observed in absorption when perturbed by the rare gases up to pressures of 40 atmospheres. The results have been compared with similar observations carried out in other laboratories in the near infra-red. Measurable shifts were observed only on the J(0-1) line. The broadening was J dependent and was strongest also on the J(0-1) line.
