Plasma concentrations of the new penicillins: amoxycillin and flucloxacillin were measured after oral and intravenous administration to patients with terminal renal disease (on and off dialysis). When these patients were off dialysis the half-life of amoxycillin in serum was 7 h and that of flucloxacillin 2.25 h. During dialysis, the half-life of amoxycillin in serum was shortened by about 50% while that of flucloxacillin remained unchanged. The data were used to determine the maintenance dose requirements of amoxycillin and flucloxacillin for patients with terminal renal insufficiency.
