Abstract The title chalcogenides have been prepared from the elements. On the basis of powder X-ray diffraction and electron diffraction studies, it is suggested that they have a composite-layered structure in which layers of BiX and MX2 are stacked alternately. The periodic length of BiMX3 in the layer-stacking direction increases with an increase in the atomic radius of M and X.
